New York Magazine has a good collection of free walks: http://nymag.com/guides/cheap/walkingtours/

If you wish to visit independently after reviewing the foot of Madison Avenue to the Cathedral of Saint Patrick (Rockefeller Center, is also there. I would recommend) up on the rocks a stunning view over the city. Then, head to MoMA for an artwork. In the north, along the Central Park.

Virtually everything that can be made in New York, within 8 hours. And many just a short walk from Times Square. Both the Empire State Building and 30 Rock in the region, and you can climb to the top of the two. I like the skirt to the top Top 30 Rock, because you a great view of the Empire State Building and Central Park to get. Both cost about $ 18-20 to climb, but it's worth it! You can spend a lot of time to walk around Times Square itself. One of my favorite places to stop smoking - and many shops around - Macy's, Virgin Megastore, Great Toys R Us, M & M stores Hereshey, Apple Store, wide world of Disney Store - in the vicinity. Madison Square Garden is where you also get a U-1-day pass that will get through - and then end of the island of Manhattan, where other things to see - Ground Zero, the Statue of Liberty and other things that are forever should, but no time to concentrate on the subway.
There is a tourist information center in Times Square, where you can get all kinds of information - 810Seventh Avenue. (bet. 52nd and 53rd Sts.)

New York is really a great city with a real plan other than just going to follow this example - you will find plenty to do!

Eight hours is a long time - not only what you can walk limited.

I think Ground Zero is a necessity - just to see the size of the region.

Choose your favorite national food - what they do normally - City of New York has them all.
